  • Suhani Shah Celebrating 25 years in Mentalism

Suhani Shah Celebrating 25 years in Mentalism by Naisargi Devdher Suhani Shah Celebrating 25 years in Mentalism 2 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Even before understanding what fame and glamour is, a child understood what magic is! It was 26 years ago, that a 6 year old Suhani saw a ‘magic show’ and dreamt of becoming a magician. This marks her 25th year performing mentalism, as she still carries the charm and innocence that 7 year old Suhani did. Talking of it, there is a lot of glamour, a factor of ‘wow’, self-love and over confidence associated with the career transition. To which, she elaborately explains, “As a child, I kept talking of magic and fortunately, my parents honestly were extremely considerate about it. You know, my father spent 6 months looking for a tutor and basically putting across magic as my educational development, because somewhere my inclination towards magic was visible. And that was the age when I didn’t even understand what glamour or for a fact even fame is! So when my first show was grandly put about, the then Chief Minister attended it. That was exactly how my career began. So for me on a personal level, fame has been a part of my career, so has glamour, it existed then, it persists now, so never does overconfidence seem to be very much an issue to say.” Putting it simply, she brought about the point of growing up with talent. Queerly, to think of, does a child always begin with imagining that she would be a part of a mega industry rather than just performing for herself? That anticipation of where she’s being lead to marks a crazy confusion in the life of an artist. “To be completely honest, yes, I did think that the talent is leading me to some place grand. I could foresee my career with magic, art and what not around. However, I truly did never expect this transition, you know! I did never know I would be assimilated with a streaming, or filming culture. That for me has not just given me a new hypo graph to live up to but also, something I truly wanted to do. Having youthful energy, I wrote books over mentalism and magic, I had art shows to perform but none of it made me as satisfied as being a part of this industry makes me. That is the exact meaning for transition and unknowingly yet beautiful, I get pushed and mingled in the industry.” When the transition of career happens to be natural, there are a lot of changes one needs to adapt to. There was a demand for the talent I held, but it was never a career that I would want to perform. Thus till the pandemic hit, I really didn’t think of it. However, when the pandemic hit, the work stopped, I was barred from home and that was exactly when I began with YouTube streaming and making videos. So the transition was never sudden, it just happened slowly. I had to adapt, accept and identify that I was away from the stage, I had screens to connect with people to, and performing live had a very different sense. That adaption was actually challenging because it brought me to a stage where I had to recognise my career scope and recognize what exactly was to be done. You know, I didn’t go to school, I didn’t go to college, I was just working all the while, and now I was here where I had to sit and just do nothing. That was more challenging for me. So I remember, starting off with an online show, ‘Magic being performed online’, that somewhat pulled me through the pandemic dilemma. While streaming on YouTube was the exact game changer I was looking for because looking back, I was having fun doing it. Little did I know that it was the beginning of a novel spectrum of my career!” All this while, Suhani mentioned the Pandemic to be a revolution in all senses However, through all of this happening, there is a high doubt of where art forms are leading to when it comes to India, because there's a lot to do with glamour here as well. “A bit contrary to what you said, India is filled with art forms with diverse roots. It’s not even similar, there is a difference in totality. And truly, in my understanding, we are always attracted to glamour. You see a beautiful rose, its glamour, desire of living in a house I glamour, and that will always be appreciated but here it’s more about how you understand art to be. Because art is also glamorous, art also is beautiful and that goes hand in hand. The window to the world during the pandemic was their phones. People were seeing direction, cinematography and all of it came from art. And whatever the screens passed on to people was art. People eventually started valuing art, realising that when nothing works, and its art that they can rely on.” Mentioning the importance of art and growing up with it, there is a lot of superstitious association with magic. Dealing with which stands out from any coaching. “Since childhood, I was looked at as a ‘DEVI’, saying I can heal everything possible. Earlier, people confused me with a musician and there I had to sort out the exact meaning of a magician, after which, a lot of people came to me asking me to heal their illnesses or asking me solve their problems. This was exactly what shifted me away from any sort of superstitious association since childhood. I give ted talks speaking against superstitions. Hence I always say, ‘I CANNOT READ MINDS, I CAN CREATE AN ILLUSION OF READING MIND’.” Just adding illusions cannot definitely define it as magic. However, according to Suhani, Guzaarish is a movie that utilises pieces of magical elements. That’s exactly where she leaves you with… Wonder how to deal with magic, because every potential of yours is magic if you know how to use it!! • Do I feel pretty?

SOCIETY by Neha Pande Do I feel pretty? 1 September 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Do I feel pretty? Do I love my looks? Miniskirt or Salwar Suit, which one should I choose? A women’s life is scandalous and decided by the way she dresses or looks, it is the harsh reality of the women beauty standards where aesthetics is everything. A judgmental world where lipsticks are more expensive than books because that’s how the society is, isn’t it? Makeup, surgery and the way I “should” dress, publicised through all social media making young girls think they are to look a certain way. Society has made it a norm for women to dress pretty with makeup done neatly and not to dress tomboyish as it is impolite for a girl to be dressed in men’s clothing. Funny thing is it doesn’t even matter if she’s perfect with beautiful skin and a neatly dressed or if she is tom boyishly dressed with bad skin, it doesn’t matter the amount or makeup she has on or does not because the society still will judge, it will still try to nit-pick on whatever they can. You may think if she’s in a Miniskirt people will drool over her and if she is in a Salwar Suit people might call her a ‘behenji’; to that, yes, that might happen with our society falling into the tracks of western culture people might like the miniskirt and beautifully done makeup better but salwar suit has its own charm and will also invite a lot of spectators. But it doesn’t matter if it’s a Salwar Suit or a Miniskirt as the female behind it will still be criticized, as if her change in size or dressing has let everyone down. Her body is caged in reviews and views with titles on her as if she’s a zoo animal, shouldn’t she be allowed to dress however she wants? Shouldn’t she wear as much makeup as she wants or not? Society may change with feminist movements going around the globe, this mentality might change and till then all we can do is to stop asking the question about which one is better, Miniskirt or Salwar Suit because it doesn’t really matter as we all are passengers of the same ship which is headed by the captain called “Society” and we all are suffering the same from the same judgment as others. • Pad vs Banana

SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Pad vs Banana 19 April 2022 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement What is Sex-education? I grew-up in a small town, where the people would receive a thrashing for uttering the word SEX. Writing the word SEX on any piece of paper, was no less than penning our own death warrant. Therefore, learning about it from our schoolbooks became impossible, and talking about it in the public was considered offensive. Along with my puberty came the age of 2G internet, and along with downloading video games setup on proxy servers, porn movies became the hot talk. These enabled the boys of my age to watch videos of penetrative sex. Yes, it was porn movies that gave us them first sex lessons. The debate of ban over pornography has always received mixed opinions, and even mine has fluctuated with time. Sex-education is certainly a must for every person in their late teenage and early adulthood. Particularly, for people like me who grow up in small towns with not much provided guidance. Having been a porn addict, I find myself qualified (read and learned) enough to write against pornography. Pornography lacks consent: I have watched many porn movies in which the female actors are seen undressing their male partners without their consent. The male actors are seen groping their female partners without their consent. Basically, pornography, in general promotes (at least supports) molestation in the name of sex. People may have different political, religious, and regional identities, but no one should consider molestation normal. Anyone defending pornography, for any intention, should at least not let this very thought slip away from their mind. Pornography encourages incest: A significant number of porn movies show the male actor having sex with a girl playing the role of his mother, sister, sister-in-law and even daughter. While the religions and cultures have different opinions on incest, research shows that incest is harmful to possible off springs. Majority of sex educators (gynaecologists) strongly oppose incest, and hence incest shouldn’t be encouraged in the name of sex through pornography. Sanitary napkins vs Bananas: A good porn movie (according to my younger version) is incomplete without a girl inserting unconventional items (like a banana) inside her private parts. The availability of such videos on the internet is a matter of disgrace. Sex education should be about spreading knowledge on the healthy menstrual cycle, sanitation of genitals, valuing consent, and so on. It should certainly not be about the ill-treatment of genitals but rather about EXPLORATION of sexuality. P.S.I do not intend to offend anyone. • How to Travel Solo like a Pro

by Rupashree Ravi TRAVEL How to Travel Solo like a Pro by Rupashree Ravi 16 August 2022 Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement A one of a kind and once in a lifetime experience is travelling, and solo travel tops that. From budgeting, keeping calm in an emergency, to meeting interesting new people, and building a soul-enriching and meaningful relationship with yourself, it teaches you everything. The post pandemic world has seen a resurgence of people getting out of their homes to try and be a part of everything they can before the next inevitable global emergency. Solo travel is where it’s at. The boundless independence to the time for self-reflection that solo travel allows you, it is both exhilarating and enlightening, no matter your age. Traveling unlocks new parts of ourselves. Soloists have emerged as a fast-growing segment in the travel industry during the past decade. But people have their perceptions, misconceptions and fears when it comes to travelling solo. Some of the most seasoned solo travellers will tell you they didn’t initially set out to adventure on their own. It can come with sheer spontaneity or proper planning; there is no in-between. Along the way, many get hooked on this independent style of traveling — freely wending their way through countries on their own itineraries, or lack thereof, and enjoying the joy of meeting new paths and people. Discover new spots all by yourself With so many places to travel to, it can be overwhelming to pick your first solo travel destination. Start by giving your trip a focus, whether it’s an activity you’ve been wanting to try like hot air ballooning or a destination that’s long been on your list. So pick your destination, and leave lots of room for serendipity. Discover new restaurants and cuisines, museums, or sunset spots on your own, and follow the recommendations of different people like the local people and other tourists from different walks of life. This will build confidence and a great deal of adventure in you. You can meet people from different cultures and backgrounds Next, set a budget and have some flexibility as well. Hotel rooms are great, but you’d be surprised to know that hostels are amazing for networking and socializing. Many even have options for single rooms if you don’t want to share a space. As you set your trip budget, give yourself an extra ten per cent leeway for any change in plans. A solo trip is the best way to perfect the art of the selfie. Explore new camera settings. Or you can ask random strangers or fellow tourists on the street to click a photograph of you. Adventure and spontaneity are the two ingredients for a great solo trip Of course, safety is one of the most important aspects of solo travel. Always remain in well-lit areas and avoid shady places. When in crowded areas, stay clear of pickpockets and guard your belongings well. Share your location with a trusted contact and download maps and routes ahead of time. The beauty of solo travel is that you can have time by yourself, but you can also link up with other people who are travelling alone like you. Eventually, you will learn to enjoy your own company, and alone time is underrated. And when you meet people you click with, be open to adventure. • Exposing Skin Care Myths Through A Dermatologist

By Anushka Sharma By Anushka Sharma Exposing Skin Care Myths Through A Dermatologist 18 June 2024 BEAUTY Advertisement Advertisement Are you someone who spends a lot of time on social media, especially looking at skincare trends? I admit I've done that, and sometimes it leads to buying things I don't need. While some trends are good, others might not be so great for your skin. Here are five skincare trends you might have seen online that aren't as helpful as they seem: 1. Flax Seeds for Wrinkles: Have you seen people making masks with flax seeds to tighten their skin? Well, it might make your skin feel nice for a little while, but it's not like getting Botox. Botox actually relaxes certain muscles in your face, while flaxseed masks just hydrate your skin temporarily. 2. Garlic for Pimples: Some folks say eating garlic can clear up acne, but that's not entirely true. Garlic does have some good properties, but it won't magically make your pimples disappear. Using skincare ingredients like salicylic acid and niacinamide is a better bet. 3. Face Flooding for Oily Skin: If you've got oily skin, you might have heard about "face flooding" to give your skin extra moisture. But for some people, it just makes them look sweaty and can even cause more breakouts. It's not a one-size-fits-all solution. 4. Collagen Masks: Those masks that melt into your skin might look cool, but they don't do much for you. Collagen in skincare can't really get absorbed into your skin like that. It might make your skin feel hydrated, but that's about it. 5. SPF Madness: We've all heard that higher SPF means better protection from the sun, right? Well, not necessarily. Too much SPF can make your skin oily, and anything beyond SPF 50 doesn't add much extra protection. Plus, you still need to reapply it often. So, next time you see a skincare trend online, take it with a grain of salt. It's always best to talk to a dermatologist before trying something new on your skin. • Dubai Fashion Week AW 26-27 Opens With Alberta Ferretti’s Quiet Assertion Of Power

Dubai Fashion Week AW 26-27 Opens With Alberta Ferretti’s Quiet Assertion Of Power By Sakshi Shah Dubai Fashion Week AW 26-27 Opens With Alberta Ferretti’s Quiet Assertion Of Power 4 February 2026 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Dubai Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2026/27 began not with spectacle, but with composure. On opening night, the energy was restrained yet deliberate as Italian fashion house Alberta Ferretti made its Middle East debut, setting a considered tone for the week ahead. It was a reminder that confidence in fashion does not always need volume—sometimes, it arrives softly, and stays longer. Fresh from Milan and presented as the opening show of the season, Alberta Ferretti’s Portrait of a Lady unfolded as a thoughtful introduction to Dubai Fashion Week’s AW26/27 narrative. The choice felt intentional. As Dubai continues to position itself as a global fashion capital, the presence of a house so deeply rooted in elegance and craftsmanship underscored the city’s evolving role as a meeting point for international design and cultural exchange. Designed by Creative Director Lorenzo Serafini, the collection reimagined the Victorian heroine through a contemporary lens—less romanticised, more self-possessed. This was femininity expressed through clarity rather than ornamentation. The woman envisioned on the runway did not demand attention; she held it. Chiffon appeared in sculpted, almost protective silhouettes, moving fluidly with the body rather than clinging to it. There was a sense of ease in how the garments existed—never rushed, never excessive. In contrast, leather and sharp tailoring introduced structure, grounding the collection in strength and intention. Trench coat elements evolved into dresses, tulle met leather in controlled opposition, and skirts emerged as a central point of expression, carrying both movement and purpose. The palette was deep and restrained. Shades of black and ivory formed the foundation, while ruby and aubergine added warmth without tipping into drama. Accessories followed the same philosophy: slouchy boots and flat ballerinas prioritised movement and realism, while velvet evening capes and discreet embellishments elevated the looks without overwhelming them. Tubular beading and feather accents appeared sparingly, offering texture rather than sparkle. What stood out most was the collection’s emotional restraint. Serafini’s vision did not rely on overt statements. Instead, it proposed a woman who dresses inwardly—her confidence instinctive, her presence assured. In a season where fashion often leans toward excess, Portrait of a Lady felt quietly radical in its refusal to perform. The significance of the moment was amplified by the presence of Alberta Ferretti, Vice President of the Aeffe Group, who attended the show alongside Serafini. Her presence marked more than a debut; it signalled a deliberate step into the region, recognising Dubai as an important voice within the global fashion conversation. From the venue to the pacing of the show, the opening night reflected Dubai Fashion Week’s growing maturity. There was a sense of balance—between international prestige and local ambition, between scale and substance. The audience, a mix of global industry figures, regional creatives, and fashion insiders, responded with attentiveness rather than frenzy. It was a show that invited looking closer. Dubai Fashion Week, co-founded by Dubai Design District (d3), part of TECOM Group PJSC, and the Arab Fashion Council, continues to shape itself as more than a regional showcase. With each season, it asserts its place on the global calendar—not by imitation, but by offering a platform where diverse narratives can coexist. As the week progresses through 6 February, the schedule brings together a mix of international and regional voices, including CTRL+BLOCK x Mrs Keepa, NIG Global x London School of Trends, That Concept Store, Narma, and John Richmond. Yet it is Alberta Ferretti’s opening statement that lingers—a reminder that fashion’s most powerful moments are often the ones that arrive without announcement. Dubai Fashion Week AW26/27 did not open loudly. It opened with intention. And sometimes, that is exactly how lasting impressions are made. • Personal Growth And Relatability: Ishita Khanna's Key To Influencer Success

Personal Growth And Relatability: Ishita Khanna's Key To Influencer Success LIFESTYLE Personal Growth And Relatability: Ishita Khanna's Key To Influencer Success by Akshra Khandelwal 26 August 2023 Advertisement Ishita Khanna, a renowned digital content creator, has carved her own niche in the lifestyle and fashion space for over three years. In an exclusive interaction, we sat down with Ishita to deep dive into the world of content creation in an ever-evolving digital landscape, what drives her to create relatable content for audiences, lifestyle and grooming hacks, the importance of self-care and her approach to personal development. "Work's been incredible. If I talk about my typical work day, it has a lot of team huddles, meetings with brands/agencies, and ideating/scripting for future content and shoots," Ishita shares as she delves into the busy world of a lifestyle influencer. Her days are filled with brainstorming sessions and collaborations that allow her to craft content that resonates with her audience. As we settled in for our chat, we were eager to know more about Ishita's creative journey. "It's fascinating how life takes us on unexpected paths," she began. "In 2018, I started freelancing in social media and content roles, which eventually led me to work for a food blog. While creating videos for the blog, I rediscovered my passion for creative direction. That's when the idea of starting my own YouTube channel struck me like lightning!" Ishita's journey is a testament to the diverse backgrounds that lead one to digital content creation. "Despite my academic background – a postgraduate degree in financial economics and preparing full-time for the UPSC examinations – my heart has always been set on creative direction, filmmaking, editing, and digital media since my early school days," she revealed. Within three months of diving into full-time content creation on YouTube, Ishita gained a massive audience of over 100K subscribers. Her fashion, styling, and lifestyle content hit all the right notes with her viewers. Since then, she's been on a mission to create her own lane in the lifestyle and fashion digital content world. Her adventures have taken her across India and beyond, where she collaborates with brands she genuinely connects with. "I believe in unleashing the power of my visual language, creativity, and marketing to connect with audiences," Ishita shared passionately. "It's not just about my content; I want to give the brands I represent more visibility too." What sets Ishita's content apart is its relatability. Naturally, we were curious about her secret sauce for creating relatable content regularly. "Inspiration comes from everywhere," she said. "From recent travels to magazine archives, movies, and even my friends – they all contribute to my creative process. But the real magic lies in the women around me – my friends, family, and women in power. Their confidence and authenticity draw me in, and I strive to push the same energy into my online content." The most fulfilling part of being a creator, according to Ishita, is the heartfelt messages she receives from women who resonate with her posts. "When someone tells me that my content helped them find what works best for their body type or boosted their confidence in what they wear, it's truly heartwarming," she shared with a warm smile. Of course, with a hectic schedule, self-care becomes essential. Ishita's self-care rituals include her beloved cup of coffee and spending quality time with her furry friends. "My dogs are my stress-busters," she admitted. "But I also find joy in cycling, working out, and spending time with my friends – those little moments of bliss keep me balanced." In the realm of fashion, comfort is key for Ishita. "I've been all about comfort lately," she laughed. "Joggers or cargo pants paired with an oversized tee are my go-to fits. I believe you can look stylish without sacrificing comfort!" For aspiring creators looking to grow personally and professionally, Ishita has some golden advice. "Stay focused on your goals and treat every day like it's day one," she emphasised. "Collaborate with others, be open to feedback, and engage authentically with your audience. Stay curious and explore new creative avenues – that's the path to growth!" As our delightful conversation neared its end, we couldn't resist asking Ishita about her upcoming projects. "Exciting content pieces are in the works with brands and agencies," she revealed with a twinkle in her eye. "Keep your eyes peeled for more in the coming months!" Her journey teaches us the value of staying true to ourselves, finding inspiration in everyday moments, and embracing personal growth with open arms. Until next time, keep sipping your coffee and unleashing your creativity – just like Ishita!
